One of the most distinguished Scottish names, bearers of the name Lyne were found first in Norfolk, England where the family had a manor and estates. Other spellings of the name include Lyon, Lions, and Lyons. In those days clerks spelt the name as it sounded and one person's name could differ in records of their birth marriage and death.
Randolf and William Lyon settled in Norfolk in 1066. Hugh Lyon was deprived of his estates in 1203 and the family moved north to Scotland where he was granted the lands of Rostinot. They were elevated to the peerage to the Lords Lyon and Glamis of Forfar, and the Earls of Strathmore and Kinghorn. The family flourished in Scotland. From this source came Elizabeth Bowes-Lyon, the late Queen Mother.
The family motto shown on the coat of arms translates as 'For king and country'.
